Kasargode Kanakambaran is the owner and lead actor of Kottaram Theatres, a drama troupe that specializes in epic themes like Ramayanam, Sakunthalam, Vikramadithyan and others. In all these dramas Kanakambaran plays the lead role of the king and it is always Marthandom Bharathi who plays the queen. It was Kanakambaran's father who managed the troupe earlier, but he withdrew owing to differences with his son after the latter married Marthandom Bharathi. His only request was that that Kanakambaram ensures the troupe continued to perform till he breathed his last.
The responsibility for running the troupe falls on Kanakambaram's shoulders. Though it performs at numerous venues, financially the troupe is in doldrums. Kanakambaran borrows money at high interest to keep the show going and is soon up to his neck in debt. Whatever gate collection he makes is taken away by his creditors who come directly to the venues to collect their dues.
Situations take a turn for the worse and the creditors beat up Kanakambaram. He determines to make money whatever way he can and becomes willing to do anything so long as the payment is prompt and in cash.
The film Kanaka Simhasanam portrays a serious theme in a humorous vein as can be expected when director Rajasenan teams up with Jayaram. The combination has delivered several hilariously successful products earlier, though their most recent venture Madhu Chandra Lekha was something of a let down.
